Neutrality in culture war lauded

Pro-family leaders are commending ExxonMobil for remaining neutral in the cultural battle over homosexual rights. Company shareholders decided again this year to retain a company policy that neither grants special rights based on sexual orientation nor includes benefits for same-sex partners.

Focus on the Family's CitizenLink website reported the story this month, calling the choice a "commonsense" decision and complementing ExxonMobil for being the only Fortune 500 corporation and major oil company that has not adopted such a policy.
 
Randy Sharp is special projects director for American Family Association, an organization that also encourages companies to stay neutral in the cultural wars. Sharp agrees with Focus's observation that it takes a lot for Exxon to stand firm at a time when homosexual activists are applying extensive pressure on corporate America through a targeted campaign to expand their special rights.
 
"I think it says a lot for the leadership [of ExxonMobil]," states Sharp. "They know right from wrong, [and] they have some type of a moral compass that tells them that special-interest groups are just that: they're special interests, and (instead) they're going to remain neutral."
 
Essentially, says the AFA spokesman, Exxon is telling homosexual activists it is not going to get involved in controversial social issues; that "we're here to produce a product, not to give favoritism to special-interest groups."
 
This is reportedly the ninth time that ExxonMobil shareholders have decided to avoid gender and sexual orientation-based changes in their employee benefits policies. Sharp is hopeful the oil company also continues to remember that the pressure coming from homosexual activists is only from a minority group, despite the fact they may be very vocal.
