ACORN logoAn Iowa congressman says the House of Representatives has sent a loud-and-clear message that no more taxpayer dollars should be given to the group ACORN, which he says is clearly a "criminal" organization.

The vote on Thursday was 345-75 (see roll call vote) to pass an amendment blocking the Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now (ACORN) from receiving federal funds under H.R. 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009. The Senate overwhelmingly passed a similar amendment on Tuesday on an 83-7 vote. (See earlier article on Senate vote)

Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa), who has been one of the most outspoken critics of ACORN on Capitol Hill, alleges there is massive evidence that the organization engaged in voter fraud. "[There were] over 400,000 fraudulent voter registration forms turned in by ACORN -- and that's by their own admission," he notes. "There are at least 70 prosecutions and convictions of ACORN personnel for violations of various laws, most of them election fraud laws."

Steve KingBut the Iowa lawmaker says an all-out, full-court-press federal investigation is the only way to bring ACORN to heel.

"We've got to have congressional investigations going on," he urges. "And Eric Holder as the [U.S.] attorney general must start a complete investigation of ACORN, where they go in with forensic accountants and audit every single ACORN affiliate along with ACORN." In addition, says King, the Internal Revenue Service should be brought in to conduct an audit of "all of the dollars that flow through this criminal enterprise."

King adds that he is shocked 75 Democratic members of the U.S. House are still willing to stand with ACORN after all the evidence that has come forward over the past week.
