SBC logoThe president of the Southern Baptist Convention says the denomination must correct what he sees as a drift from a Great Commission.

Dr. Johnny Hunt made his comments during his first presidential address to the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Executive Committee in Nashville. Hunt, pastor of First Baptist Church of Woodstock, Georgia, said the denomination is fragmented and must make proclaiming the gospel first priority.

Johnny HuntHe adds that the drift from the Great Commission is evident in the declining baptisms in the SBC. Hunt believes the time has come for greater camaraderie in the denomination and an emphasis on reaching the younger generation.

"Have you noticed that there's [sic] people we're leading to Christ that don't look like you, and don't look like me? They don't even have the same likes we have; they don't even have the same approach when they get in the ministry and desire to make a difference for Jesus. They don't dress like us; they don't have the same hairstyles; they don't think, necessarily, like us," Hunt contends. "Some would say the younger generation is our problem. I'll say this, if they're our problem, we don't have a future."

Dr. Hunt urges the denomination to stop dividing over secondary issues that have dominated the SBC in recent years.
