Benham: Conservatism 'backs up' when truly tested

reverse gearshift smallPastor and pro-life activist Flip Benham says the recent controversy over comments made by the former pastor of Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama proves that many conservatives have no backbone.

Benham, director of Operation Save America and Operation Rescue, says it is clear that Senator Obama's former pastor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright, is preaching a different gospel. And the activist finds it appalling that high-profile conservative leaders have not been more vocal in their criticism of the controversial pastor. According to Benham, those leaders either cannot see -- or choose not to expose -- Wright and the beliefs of his denomination, the United Church of Christ in America.

"Barack Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, is no more a Christian than he is a poached egg," Benham says bluntly. "He is a member of the United Church of Christ ... a church that long ago abandoned its responsibility to stand upon God's Word. It believes that little baby boys and girls in their mother's wombs can and should be killed if a mother desires." In addition, says Benham, the UCC believes an individual "can be a practicing homosexual and a Christian at the same time."

But Benham admits he is not surprised that major media outlets have not investigated the UCC's unscriptural teachings -- and he explains his lack of surprise.

"Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly are all conservatives -- and conservatism is pretend salt; it is not the real thing. And what I mean by that is simply this: Conservatism will stand in the face of perdition and say that this is wrong and that is wrong, and it will stand and stand and stand -- but it always backs up," says the Christian activist. "Whenever we elect conservatives to office, we're continually having to prod them to please vote for the positions where God would have them stand."

Benham believes that for the first time in history, the U.S. is poised to elect a president who does not acknowledge the Jesus of scripture as Savior of the world.
