Activist: Apply Bible, Constitution to AZ law

A Field Poll released on Friday shows that Californians still don't agree on the Arizona immigration law -- but one conservative activist thinks it's a decision that Christians shouldn't be uncertain about.
Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, believes Christians must only take two authorities into consideration when choosing their stance on the immigration issue: the Bible and the U.S. Constitution.
"By applying the Bible and the Constitution, you can see that the border laws need to be enforced and respected, whether you regard illegal aliens as foreign visitors, temporary workers, or invaders," Thomasson explains.
He notes that both authorities are clear on a nation's obligation to protect its own people, while offering the same "legal protections from physical harm and theft as citizens enjoy" to foreigners.
The conservative activist believes the Bible gives a nation the right to rid individuals who may disrupt the peace. Moreover, he says, it maintains that those who enter a country must follow its entry laws.
"The Bible also teaches that invaders either should be or can be repelled," he reports. "And the Bible teaches that foreigners need to follow all the laws of the land, which in America begins with the laws of entry."
The poll further shows that 49 percent of Californians support the immigration law, while 45 percent oppose it. A majority of Caucasians and African-Americans favor the bill, but 71 percent of Hispanics in The Golden State are against it. Moreover, Republicans tend to support the law, while Democrats disagree with tightening the borders.
Most Americans, however, passionately declare their support or disapproval on the controversial bill -- a decision that Thomasson says is made based on the individual's "subjective values, experiences and feelings" instead of the founding principles of this nation.
"If you believe America is special and [if you] were born here, you tend to support strong border control and the Arizona enforcement law," he concludes. "If you respect other nations equally or more than America and [if] you or your relatives were born south of the border, you tend to oppose the Arizona law."
The state law, which is currently facing legal challenges from the federal government, allows authorities to question the immigration status of individuals who have "reasonable suspicion" of being an illegal -- an act that critics contend promotes racial profiling. But in the midst of the controversy surrounding the policy, the SaveCalifornia.com president is urging Californians to return to the Constitution.
He points out that "our Constitution, which all believers are called to obey, establishes the United States of America as a sovereign nation, with its own authority, its own military, and a solemn obligation to defend herself."
