A senior Army strategist and Pentagon advisor finds it disturbing that a number of Defense Department personnel have been caught with child pornography.
The Department of Defense reports that an investigation has identified dozens of members of the military and defense contractors, including those with top-level security clearances, who have obtained child pornography. The Boston Globe first reported the results of the probe after obtaining documents through the Freedom of Information Act. The report, released Friday by the Pentagon, is particularly alarming because many of the individuals would have access to the nation's most heavily guarded secrets. Among those implicated were individuals tied to the National Reconnaissance Office and the National Security Agency.Pentagon strategist Bob Maginnis finds it hard to understand why those involved were able to get past the government's filtering system. "They would have to be in an unfiltered environment, which suggests to me that there is a great deal of trust in that person, more so than in some of the facilities that I have access to," he suggests. "So that really rings some alarm bells, far more than perhaps the average person would understand." Maginnis explains there is also concern that some of those in possession of child pornography might be susceptible to blackmail. "I don't know if that's possible that someone could use it for blackmail or for other types of coercive activities against an individual. Certainly the repercussions for engaging in that behavior are prohibited, and therefore, you could lose your job for it," he speculates. Some of the individuals in question have been prosecuted, but other cases remain in limbo.
