Wikipedia under fire for posting porn

laptop on fireWikipedia, the online encyclopedia, is facing harsh criticism over the posting of sexually explicit photos and images, including that of homosexuals.

Officials with Wikipedia say they permit the smut because they have a policy against censoring anything -- but that is not true, according to Bob Peters of Morality in Media. He says Wikipedia does not post child porn on the site, and they also censor personal attacks or anything potentially libelous.

Peters believes the FBI ought to check out the filth. "Well certainly the Department of Justice should look into it," he maintains. "But under the currently policies of the [agency] it's not likely to happen ...."

He says the Justice Department has a tendency to ignore the problem of Internet pornography, and so far they have refused to go after it. Another added problem to the Wikipedia dilemma, Peters notes, is that there is nothing to stop children from accessing the site. Peters found this out first hand.

"It wasn't required to prove my age or type in a credit card or anything else," he points out. "So certainly Wikipedia is ... making it easier for kids to access pornography."

Peters also cautions parents that many of the filtering devices people have in their homes and schools are not geared to protect against Wikipedia's material.
