public prayerSouthern Baptists are organizing a 40-day prayer campaign in conjunction with their values voter registration drive.

The 40-40 Prayer Vigil for Spiritual Revival and National Renewal runs from September 24 through November 2, two days before the general election. Dr. Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, says it is important for Christians to pray between now and Election Day.

"I can't think of a better way for people of faith to spend their time between now and the first Tuesday of November than on their knees in prayer, with an open Bible in front of them and an open heart seeking God's guidance, direction and wisdom," said Land.

Dr. Land believes Christian citizenship involves more than voting. "People have come to us and said, 'What can we do? We believe the country is going in the wrong direction, that there are a multitude of problems that seem insoluble -- what can we do?' And we said, 'Well, God tells us to pray,'" he adds.

Southern Baptist leaders say more than 1,300 churches have signed up for the prayer campaign.
