A dating service is targeting its advertising at married people -- encouraging them to commit adultery.
The television commercials are from the Ashley Madison Agency. According to Bill Johnson of the American Decency Association, the commercials are "basically giving married people a place to find attachment with others who are available -- whether married or unmarried." Television is not the group's only advertising venue. One of Ashley Madison's magazine ads invites other websites to establish an affiliate program. That ad depicts a stone tablet bearing one of the Ten Commandments -- except the words are modified to read: "Thou shall make money from adultery." Johnson examined the operation's website as well. "They have as one of their logo statements 'Life is short, have an affair.' This company basically states on their web page: 'Have an affair... guaranteed.'" CEO Neil Biderman is quoted as saying that their campaign is designed currently to encourage married women to have an affair. One commercial was rejected by the Super Bowl and NBC, but it aired on Texas television stations during the game. According to Johnson, there is more. "They proudly announce that they have been able to run their ads successfully on CNN, ESPN, Fox News, and MSNBC," he reports. Ashley Madison claims more than 3.2 million subscribers, and proudly boasts that in Texas alone, 200,000 people have signed up with the company's "Infidelity Service" in the past two years. Johnson suggests people offended by the commercials contact their local station or cable source.
