A biographer of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin contends that if the economy hadn't tanked, her presence on the GOP ticket would have made the election much closer than it turned out.
Lorenzo Benet is an assistant editor at People magazine who traveled to Alaska to interview Governor Palin last summer with the idea of writing a book about only the second sitting governor to give birth to a child while in office. But in his recently released biography Trailblazer: An Intimate Biography of Sarah Palin (Threshold Editions, Feb. 2009), Benet recounts how the entire focus of his book changed when John McCain picked her to be his running mate last year. "He liked her a lot. He had been watching her and was really impressed with how she handled herself and [that] she was up-to-date on energy issues," says the author. Benet acknowledges that the governor's obvious "soft spot," however, was foreign affairs. "And it hurt her a little bit in the campaign," he adds. And except for "a couple of bad interviews," Benet believes Senator McCain made a "pretty good choice" for his running mate. "If the economy hadn't tanked, this election probably would have been a bit closer," he suggests. "I've spent a little time with her. I've seen her operate in meetings, [and] she's won three or four elections. She's a very smart woman." Benet does not believe running for president is the top priority of the Alaska governor right now. She faces a re-election challenge next year.
