North KoreaAssociated Press smallA well-known contemporary Christian band has just returned from communist North Korea.

Casting Crowns' lead singer Mark Hall says the Christian band was able to build friendships in North Korea in the tense days following the communist nation's defiant missile launch.

Casting Crowns and the Annie Moses Band were the only American groups invited to perform at the annual Spring Arts festival in Pyongyang. Hall points out the band was escorted by North Korean college students who were studying English and who had lots of questions about America.

"[They] along with their English teacher were our hosts for the week. We really had a great time with them. We had many interesting conversations," he says. "They had tons of different questions all about different things about America. It was very educational for us."

Mark Hall (Casting Crowns)Hall notes the band focused on building relationships. "I am a believer, but you love people first -- not necessarily just a message that you're wanting to convey," he adds. "So we were just there loving people."

Casting Crowns had also performed there in 2007, so this time Hall and his wife took their children, who he says were a focal point of North Koreans who had never seen an American child.
