NPR logoA radio host on an NPR affiliate in Arizona has been fired for talking with OneNewsNow.

The controversy erupted in late April when two radio hosts on KJZA (89.5 FM; Williams, Arizona) were informed that their weekend programs would be axed due to the Christian focus of the shows. The canceled shows were "Dinosaurs, Science, and the Bible," hosted by Dr. John Nay; and "Christian Corner," hosted by David McNabb.

When interviewed in April, McNabb informed OneNewsNow that the general manager of KJZA told him the programs were cut because of a policy change at NPR headquarters in Washington. However, NPR denies any policy change and says they have no plans to change any policy concerning Christian programming.

David McNabb (formerly with KJZA - NPR)After OneNewsNow ran the stories, McNabb was fired from his position as sales director. "I was fired because...Tom Erickson, the general manager and owner of KJZA, said that I spoke with you without authorization from him -- and that that was unacceptable," he shares.

McNabb says that after the first story ran, Erickson received several calls from listeners who were upset that he removed the religious programs from KJZA. OneNewsNow contacted Erickson to get his side of the story, but he immediately hung up. Attempts to establish contact with Erickson have to-date proved fruitless.

Upon further investigation, it was found that KJZA is licensed to a St. Paul Bible College; however, such a college cannot be found. There used to be a St. Paul Bible College in Minnesota, but in 1992 the school changed its name to Crown College. OneNewsNow spoke with the person in charge of media at Crown College and was informed they had no knowledge of KJZA.
