Mary Ann Glendon (Harvard)The National Right to Life Committee will honor Mary Ann Glendon, the Harvard law professor who recently rejected a prestigious award from the University of Notre Dame.

The Harvard educator's decision came amidst the controversy surrounding Notre Dame's invitation to President Barack Obama so speak at commencement ceremonies on May 17. Tony Lauringer of the National Right to Life Committee explains why Glendon turned down the award from the most prominent Catholic school in America.

"Glendon made it clear that it is incompatible with her Catholic faith -- and incompatible with Notre Dame's Catholic character and identity -- to honor a person with the aggressively pro-abortion views of President Barak Obama," he says.

Glendon -- who was to receive Notre Dame's Laetare Medal -- served under former President George W. Bush. "Professor Glendon was the ambassador to the Vatican from 2007 until 2009, when the Bush administration ended," Lauringer explains.

In October, National Right to Life will present its Proudly Pro-Life Award to Glendon because of her principled commitment to the protection of innocent, preborn babies.
