A conservative media watchdog organization says the mainstream media's recent coverage of Senator Ted Kennedy's funeral was a celebration of big-government activism and a promotion of the liberal agenda.
The Media Research Center (MRC) says while the death of the Massachusetts Democrat was undeniably a big political story, the five days of intense media coverage exposed how journalists see the late senator's ardent liberal agenda as unquestionably good for America -- not as controversial policies that fueled high-tax big government at the expense of the free market. Rich Noyes, director of research at the MRC, says the media's message was clear. "There was no debate about whether his 40 years of expanding government, expanding regulation, higher taxes was a net benefit to society -- as they would all claim -- or in fact created more harm in society," says the media researcher. "These were things that most Americans did not accept when he was alive -- or today, as seen by the big debate over ObamaCare." Noyes recalls that when the media covered President Ronald Reagan's funeral, it was respectful. But he notes one did not have to watch very long to know what liberals thought about what Reagan did in office. "[There were[ all the criticisms that his policies just helped the rich, or weren't good for African Americans, or increased tensions in the world, or what have you," he claims. "All of those criticisms were made substantively. [But] in the case of Kennedy, everything he did was seen as positive on the network coverage -- and there was no debating it." The MRC spokesman points out that some media pundits and commentators stated that Kennedy's liberal achievements were redemption for the flaws in his personal life.
