A spokesman for Exodus International says despite the strongest worldwide homosexual-affirming culture ever, the ministry is seeing rapid growth in the number of people it helps obtain freedom from homosexual attractions.
Randy Thomas, executive vice president of Exodus International, attributes the success to the increase in participating groups and outreaches that help spread his message of liberation through Christ. From 2003-08, Thomas says, member agencies have increased in number from 117 to over 200. "We have more churches, more professional counselors, as well as member ministries coming alongside and providing help and hope to those dealing with same-sex attraction," Thomas explains. More than half of Exodus's 2007 annual national conference attendees were first-timers, he adds. And in its two years of existence, the Exodus Church Network has expanded to 70 churches, which provide support and resources to those looking for freedom from homosexuality. Exodus leaders attribute the growth to what they call a "counter-cultural revolution" -- the search for meaning by those in the lifestyle in response to their own discontent. "They look at the people around them and they're seeing so many people struggling with their identity and their sexuality in a wide variety of different ways," Thomas describes. "So Exodus has become even more attractive to people who are simply questioning what identity and sexuality means." Thomas asserts the Christian element in perspective and resources provided to the seekers has made the difference in their being increasingly attracted to trying a lifestyle change away from homosexuality.
