ACORN fraud finally sprouts on mainstream news

ACORN logoA conservative media watchdog says as the controversy surrounding ACORN continues to grow, the mainstream media is reluctantly beginning to cover the story.

This week another undercover video emerged that was produced by an independent filmmaker posing as a pimp along with a purported prostitute. It shows them receiving assistance from an employee of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) to obtain housing for an illegal sex business. It was the fourth video produced by James O'Keefe and his partner Hannah Giles, who posed as a prostitute named Eden.

Earlier videos of ACORN employees offering similar assistance to would-be prostitution operations created such a stir that the Senate voted 83-7 on Tuesday to approve an amendment yanking federal funding from the organization.

Dan Gainor is vice president for business and culture at the Culture and Media Institute of the Media Research Center. He says because of the depth of the ACORN scandal, CBS and NBC have finally covered the story.

"You reach a point where the building is on fire if you don't acknowledge it. I think what's happening here is it was so obvious that they weren't covering it," he points out. "And when Congress voted and they've already got the Census [Bureau] withdrawing connection to ACORN. You've got now four videos! They just can't ignore it in good conscience."

Dan Gainor (Culture and Media Institute)ABC remains obstinate, Gainor notes. "Charles Gibson admitted that he knew nothing about the story five days into the story. So now you've either got Charles Gibson basically being willfully ignorant or lying. I'm willing to take willfully ignorant, because they don't consider this important in the same way they didn't consider Fannie Mae and Van Jones important," he concludes.

Gainor says as with ACORN, those stories involved people the mainstream media liked -- so they did not write about them.
