The march against healthcare reform proposals continues.
One of the major concerns is funding of healthcare reform and its impact on the insured, according to Burke Balch of the National Right to Life Committee. "Unless there is sustainable, adequate financing, over-promising while under-funding health insurance for the uninsured will almost surely lead to rationing when down the road, government has to face the shortfall," Balch explains. He adds that rationed healthcare would likely impact vulnerable groups. "The government must not be authorized -- whether through comparative research that uses quality-adjusted life years or other measures -- to compare or encourage denial of life-saving medical treatment, food or fluids based on the patient's age, disability or quality of life," he contends. Balch says the cost of treatment should not be used to pressure people into refusing it to save money or provide assisted suicide as an alternative.
