Australian pro-family group foresees challenges with new PM

AustraliaThe head of a pro-family group in Australia says he and his fellow activists now have a tougher fight on their hands since voters elected a new liberal prime minister.

Since his election, Kevin Rudd has stood for sweeping changes. The prime minister -- who claims to be a Christian -- is a member of the liberal Labor Party, which advocates for legalized prostitution, free-standing abortion clinics, and removal of all barriers that prevent homosexuals from adopting children.

Jack Sonnemann, head of the Australian Federation for the Family, shares that over the past several years his organization has had several successes on behalf of families -- notably, getting Playboy out of the country, shutting down dial-a-porn phone lines, and removing all X-rated programming from premium television networks. But he fears that Rudd's election could erase many of those victories.

"The Labor Party seems to be committed to the destruction of the family," states Sonnemann. "Now what I mean by that is, in the Labor Party policy handbook they want to lower the age of sexual consent to 13; [and] they, of course, introduced legal prostitution in Australia."

Rudd also had stated that his party would not block plans of the Australian Capital Territory government to legalize same-sex civil unions. But Sonnemann says quick response from pro-family activists caused the new PM to rethink his decision.

"We were poised and ready because we knew there was going to be a fight," says Sonnemann. "And the first thing we did was shot off about 3,500 letters to my special readers of my newsletter, and those letters caused the prime minister of Australia to reverse his stand. He said 'Oops, I'm sorry, we will not legalize same-sex marriage.'"

Although Sonnemann was able to change the prime minister's mind on this issue, he expects many more battles with the new administration.
