Lou DobbsA conservative media watchdog believes that former CNN anchor Lou Dobbs was forced to resign because the network didn't agree with his stance on illegal immigration.

The long-time CNN anchor made the bombshell announcement on Veterans Day. "Tonight I want to turn to a personal note, if I may, and address a matter that has raised some curiosity. This will be my last broadcast here on CNN, where I've worked for most of the past 30 years," Dobbs said. He went on to explain that he had been advised "to go beyond the role at CNN and to engage in constructive problem-solving as well as to contribute positively to the great understanding of the issues of our day."

Jeff Poor (Business and Media Institute)Jeff Poor, a staff writer at the Business and Media Institute of the Media Research Center, believes there was continued pressure at CNN to get Dobbs off the network.

"The left has really gone after Mr. Dobbs just for stances on immigration and other things in general," explains Poor. "But I think they finally chipped away enough, and the management at CNN has been cracking down on Dobbs [and] a lot of his appearances lately. I think this is where it just kind of all came together."

According to Poor, there has been a great deal of speculation that Dobbs might wind up on the Fox Business Channel.

"It would make sense to see somebody like Lou Dobbs have a nightly show there, even a weekly spot or on the weekends. But the other thing people are talking about is that he's taking this time off to run for office," the writer notes. "I'm not necessarily buying into that, but I think that's one of things being thrown around."

Poor says Dobbs' name has even been mentioned as a possible presidential candidate.
