The Parents Television Council (PTC) is expressing disapproval of ABC for airing what it calls "explicit material" during the American Music Awards.
Sunday night, the annual awards show featured a performance by Adam Lambert of American Idol fame that conveyed an explicit sex theme and employed a male-on-male kiss. Melissa Henson of the PTC says parents should contact ABC, Dick Clark Productions, and the show's advertisers. "Traditionally the American Music Awards [was] one of the cleaner awards shows on TV because of Dick Clark's involvement, and it's unfortunate to see it take this turn in another direction," Henson notes. "If folks live in the Central Time zone, we're also asking them to consider filing a complaint with the FCC." Lambert, an open homosexual, has claimed that the vulgar portions of his performance were not scripted, but Henson does not buy that. FoxNews is reporting today that while ABC knew some of what Lambert had planned for his performance, they were not aware of the extent it reached. As a result of his provocative performance, the network canceled his appearance today on Good Morning America, a decision Lambert says he respects. The singer was then scheduled to appear on CBS's The Early Show -- Good Morning America's rival.
