Indiana council nixes problematic ordinance

Pro-family forces are claiming a victory in the Hoosier State's second largest city.

Fort Wayne City Council members rejected a proposed ordinance which would have granted special behavior-based protections to people with gender identity disorders. The city already has non-discrimination ordinances for sexual orientation on the books, but the proposal would have expanded that protection.

Micah Clark (AFA of IN)Micah Clark, executive director of the American Family Association of Indiana, says the proposal simply went too far.

"People are [generally] free to do as they choose...in private, but when you ask the government to applaud your behavior, that goes too far," he comments. "And the council rejected [the] adding [of] gender identity and that type of thing into their statutes to allow special protections for people who choose their [sexual] identity."

Clark adds that there were major problems with the proposal. "What you're really having to defend is allowing a man dressed as a woman to enter a public bathroom for women, for example, and the effect that could have on children," he explains. "Or to have an employee -- male employee with male features -- dressed up as a woman and the employer not be able to correct that or to discipline that individual."

AFA of Indiana provided information to the council about what gender identity and homosexual behavior-based ordinances mean and how they can threaten the rights of citizens and business owners.
