Does America need repairs?

global responsibility smallA conservative media watchdog is taking issue with some recent remarks by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams at a college commencement ceremony.

Brent Baker of Newsbusters.org reports that Williams implied America is broken as he told graduates at Ohio State University, "We need you to fix the country."

Bob Knight of the Culture and Media Institute (CMI) says it is not difficult to understand why Williams feels that way about the U.S. "One reason you should take with a grain of salt anything these broadcasters tell us is that they are marinated daily in a sea of bad news. So they do have a jaundiced view of America. But this is a far greater country than they give it credit for being," Knight explains.

Williams also encouraged OSU graduates to get involved in efforts to protect the climate, saying "something tells me this may be a challenge in the years ahead" to "find a way to get around without fuel in our tanks that comes from an enemy of this country."

Robert KnightKnight says commencement speakers cannot go wrong telling students they must do something about global warming. "That's the liberal mantra," says the media analyst, "because the liberals have discovered that if you can create the idea of a carbon footprint for everyone and say that if we don't curb this through government action, the earth will heat up and explode -- then this justifies virtually any increase in government power over the individual person," Knight contends.

Williams and other reporters, according to Knight, are not telling the entire story to its viewers. He disagrees with the media's desire to change America "radically beyond recognition."

"America's not broken. It's the freest, greatest country in the world. And although we have some problems, the liberals' solution would be to change it to increase the power of government, increase the power of media over what the people want. Because the media are not reporting everything people need to know to be self-governing," Knight adds.

The CMI spokesman argues the media are not telling Americans the downside of changes they want to see occur, such as extreme measures to curb global warming and the advent of same-sex "marriage."
