Catholic school honors pro-abortion Supreme Court judge

The president of a conservative Catholic group says his organization is protesting New York's Fordham University for giving an award to Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer.

Stephen BreyerThe award is the 2008 Fordham-Stein Ethics Prize and is given to an individual who has been at the top of his or her career in promoting legal ethics. However, Patrick Riley, president of The Cardinal Newman Society, says the problem with honoring Justice Breyer with the award is that he is pro-choice -- and Fordham University is a Catholic school.

"We have a serious concern about this, especially at a Catholic university, when an individual is being honored who was responsible for overturning state bans on partial-birth abortion because of a...lack of a so-called exception for health of the mother, which is often so broadly defined that it nullifies the law," Riley contends.

The Cardinal Newman Society sent a letter to the university, but the letter has so far remained unanswered. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York has also condemned the university's actions, but Riley claims this is nothing new.

"Fordham University has a history of sponsoring pro-abortion speakers and, in many cases honorees, both at commencement ceremonies and at other events," he explains. "In fact just this past month, the alumni club of Fordham in Washington, DC, along with Father McShane, honored Congressman John Lewis of Georgia who has a 100-percent pro-abortion rating from NARAL."

According to an Associated Press report, Cardinal Egan adds that a "mistake of this sort will not happen again." Over 1,500 people, including Fordham students and alumni, have signed a petition to revoke the award. Despite the protest, Riley expects the award ceremony to take place Wednesday night, but he says Fordham could be jeopardizing its stance as a Catholic University by such actions.
