An abstinence education advocate is hopeful that the new leadership in Washington will continue to fund abstinence education in the near future.
During the campaign of president-elect Barack Obama, the Illinois senator repeatedly stated that he would review the nation's budget line-by-line and remove programs that do not work, while strengthening those that do. Valerie Huber, the executive director of the National Abstinence Education Association, is confident that abstinence education will not be cut from the budget. "I'm hopeful, in that the last two years have had Democrat leadership in both the House and the Senate, and abstinence education has been maintained [during that time]," she points out. Huber notes that, according to scientific research, abstinence education works. "We have a growing body showing its effectiveness, both for those who have never been sexually active, but also for teens who have been sexually experienced; they are much more likely to discontinue that sexual activity," she adds. "And those who are not sexually active, abstinence programs are much more likely to help them delay that sexual onset. So absolutely, we have a growing body of science on our side showing it's effective."
