prayer chalkboard smudged bigA Christian legal group is kicking off its annual defense for graduation ceremony prayers.

Liberty Counsel is launching its "Friend or Foe" Graduation Prayer Campaign. Founder Matt Staver explains the program's significance.

"Liberty Counsel's Friend or Foe Graduation Prayer Campaign is designed to educate and, if necessary, designed to litigate to make sure that religious viewpoints and themes are not censored from graduation," he says.

Staver points out his organization will befriend schools that do not force or prohibit prayer. He adds that if the schools allow students to engage in secular messages, they must allow religious messages as well.

Matt Staver"On the other hand, if after education the school districts continue to insist on censoring religious and particularly Christian viewpoints, we will litigate," he adds. "We will be their foe rather than their friend."

In most cases, Staver contends school administrators want to do the right thing, but unfortunately they succumb to the intimidation tactics of groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union. He says the ACLU has very little legal ground to stand on and will often try to intimidate school officials through letters and phone calls that threaten lawsuits if prayers are allowed.
