The battle for educational control continues in Texas.
The Texas Senate has introduced Senate Bill 2275. That bill seeks to take curriculum decisions away from the elected State Board of Education and give decision-making over to an unelected commissioner of education. And now the Texas House Elections Committee has introduced a similar bill -- House Bill 420. HB 420 was authored by Texas representative Donna Howard, an Austin Democrat who twice ran for a position on the State Board of Education and lost. Terri Leo is a conservative member of the board. "The Democrats don't like the fact that now there are some solid conservative Republicans basically changing some things and demanding change in the public school system and doing it from the State Board level," Leo notes. Opponents of HB 420 are urging Texans to call their representatives and voice their concerns.
