Canadian university says no to the unborn

taped mouthStudents at one Canadian university are attempting to silence the pro-life voice.

The pro-life group called Choose Life invited Jose Ruba of the Canadian Centre for Bioethical Reform to make a presentation at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, but pro-choice forces stepped in to try to stop it.

McGill Deputy Provost Morton Mendelson defended Choose Life's right to Ruba's presentation, saying the school did not want to stifle debate or the expression of ideas. However, Choose Life lost its certification as an official group after the Student Society of McGill University voted by an overwhelming margin to censure the event and refuse funding for the group should it choose to continue with the event.

Choose Life founder Natalie Fohl said the event went on as scheduled. "[But] we are now ineligible for funding for the remainder of our existence," she says.

CanadaFohl says the situation further deteriorated when a large group of pro-choice students disrupted the event. She says it started with an invitation from the students for Ruba to stop and leave, and then erupted into chanting and evolved into singing children's songs.

At that point, campus officers arrested two people for mischief. Both students were never charged with any crime and were released.

Fohl says the students disrupted Ruba's presentation on the correlation between past genocides such as the Holocaust and abortion. And they did not even listen to what he had to say, she notes.

"Through their actions, our rights as students, our freedom of assembly, expression, speech were unjustly violated, and that's just incredibly unfortunate on a university campus," Fohl says.

Choose Life is currently considering its options, including whether to appeal loss of student funding, but Fohl says they will continue to spread the truth about abortion.
