Another possible McCain VP pick

John McCainA well-known evangelical leader has come up with a "sleeper" pick to be the vice presidential running mate of Republican Senator John McCain.

Senator McCain (R-Arizona) says he has not selected a running mate yet, but wants someone who shares similar priorities. Dr. Richard Land, who heads the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, thinks Congressman Eric Cantor (R-Virginia) would be a great choice because he is "as solid as a rock on social issues."  Cantor, a conservative Jew from Richmond, also has a 100 percent pro-life voting record.

If McCain were to pick Cantor, Land says it would be a good way to reaffirm his pro-life and social conservative credentials. "He's been trying to build momentum, and I think he has built some with the speech he made on judges and some of the statements he's made," said Dr. Land. "But he could completely take the air out of that balloon if he picks a pro-choice running mate."

Dr. Land adds that Cantor is very telegenic, a very good speaker, and would help keep Virginia in the Republican column. "I've been told by people in the Jewish community that if McCain were to pick him that it would up the percentage of the Jewish vote for McCain, particularly against Obama, who some of the Jewish community have real doubts about," he continues. "And the Jewish community will be very important in Florida, in New Jersey, and in Pennsylvania."

On a scale of 1 to 10, Land rates McCain's outreach to Evangelicals and other socially conservatives as a "7."
