Debates mum on immigration so far

Illegal alien road signCalifornia-based immigration reform activist Rick Oltman hopes CBS News' Bob Schieffer will address the subject of immigration when he moderates Wednesday night's final presidential debate.

So far, the issue of illegal immigration has not been addressed in either of the first two presidential debates or the vice-presidential matchup. Rick Oltman, the national spokesman for Californians for Population Stabilization, hopes the third presidential debate will be the charm.

"During the 2004 election, one of the debates that President Bush was in with John Kerry was moderated by Bob Schieffer, and many of us continued to e-mail Bob Schieffer with questions about immigration," he recalls. "And during that debate, Bob Schieffer did say the issue [on which he] got more e-mails...than anything was immigration."

According to Oltman, immigration activists are bombarding the CBS commentator with more questions this election cycle. "We'll all be watching very closely to see just how positive these two candidates are in their response, or are they going to mealy-mouth their way around and once again show us that they have no intention of doing anything?" he adds. "I frankly don't think there's a dime's worth of difference between McCain and Obama on the immigration issue."

Oltman believes both candidates remain committed to open borders so that an unrestricted flow of cheap labor can come into the United States.
