A black Baptist pastor who heads the group Christians for Social Justice says there's a lot of hypocrisy involved in longtime Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan's praise of Democratic presidential frontrunner Barack Obama.
Farrakhan said Sunday in Chicago that Senator Obama (D-Illinois) is the "hope of the entire world that America will change and be made better." According to Associated Press, while addressing the annual convention of the Nation of Islam, Farrakhan spent most of a nearly two-hour speech praising Obama. (See earlier article) Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton responded with a statement saying, "Senator Obama has been clear in his objections to Minister Farrakhan's past pronouncements and has not solicited the minister's support." But New Jersey pastor Clenard H. Childress, Jr. -- founder of the website BlackGenocide.org -- says Farrakhan's backing of Obama shows "deception breeds more deception." " ... Has Islam chosen to ignore Obama's advocacy for men having sex with men, and women with women?" questions Childress. "I would like to know, has Islam also decided to join with Barack Obama and the abortion industry and the wholesale killing of babies in the womb? Are we asked now to ignore our faith and our conscience? This is sad." But in a sense, the pastor shares, the Nation of Islam leader is just doing what many other Americans are going -- setting their values aside in favor of the prospect of political victory. "It's obvious that Louis Farrakhan is riding the present popularity of Barack Obama, but yet once again at the expense of his own values -- values that I understood Islam held," says Childress. "But yet such is most of America, and those who are advocating Barack Obama's ... candidacy are also forgetting their values." Childress says in his opinion, Obama's support for abortion alone makes the Illinois senator unfit to be president.
