Liberty Counsel wins victory over ACLU

On August 24, Federal District Judge Casey Rodgers ruled that Michelle Winkler was not in contempt of court for having her husband pray at an awards banquet.
In January 2009, Judge Rodgers had entered a broadly worded injunction against Santa Rosa County (Florida) School District, Winkler’s employer, regarding prayer and religious activities of school employees.
Winkler later attended a privately funded, off-campus event after school hours to honor instructional employees of the school district. She asked her husband to read a prayer blessing she wrote for the honorees.
The ACLU claimed Winkler should be held in civil contempt of the court order. Judge Rodgers ruled against the ACLU, concluding that Winkler’s husband’s prayer at a voluntary gathering outside the  school did not violate the court’s order.
