West Virginia’s 17th Christian Heritage Week
Bruce Barilla is an activist’s hero. In 1992 he convinced the governor of West Virginia to declare a Christian Heritage Week. Since that time, many mayors across the state have also celebrated the week on a more local basis.
Barilla has not been satisfied with getting the Christian Heritage Week only in West Virginia. He has contacted presidents for almost two decades in attempts to establish a national Christian Heritage Week. It may not seem possible to get a national week passed in the near future, but there are several things citizens can do to get one passed in their town or state.
Barilla’s Web site (www.chwinwv.org) has several ideas for people who want to celebrate Christian heritage in their town. Things like putting up three crosses in a high traffic area, donating a communion table baptistry to a local prison, placing an ad for abortion alternatives in the Yellow Pages or sponsoring a Nativity scene on public property during December are just a few.
Many do not know their rights concerning the display of a Nativity scene on public property. For those who would like to place one in their town and are not sure where to get started, Barilla has another Web site, www.nativityhelp.org, that will help.
Everyone who has the ability to be an activist has no excuse not to act.
