Christian gets visit from FBI for prayer vigil

On June 4, 2009, Rev. Patrick Mahoney, director of the Christian Defense Coalition, and Kaitlin, his daughter, laid roses in front of the Chinese Embassy. He chose the day because it was the 20-year anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
Mahoney honored the students who were brutalized and killed, and prayed the Chinese government would protect and honor human rights and religious liberty. Shortly after his peaceful demonstration, he received a visit from the FBI.
The agents came to his home to “gather information.” Mahoney made it clear that his problem was not with the agents. They were professional and courteous. His trouble is that he was questioned for exercising his First Amendment right. Mahoney has conducted demonstrations 40 times over the span of 20 years at the Chinese Embassy, all without hearing a word from the government.
Mahoney feels there are several questions that need to be answered: “Who ordered the agents to come to my house and question me and why? Why would the FBI want to gather intelligence and question an American citizen who was peacefully exercising his First Amendment rights? Was there any political agenda to the visit?”
He also stated, “My prayer is that I was not visited and questioned because I have been an outspoken critic of President Obama’s lack of commitment to human rights around the world.”
