A federal judge in San Francisco has waved a green flag for a lawsuit filed over prayer.
Pacific Justice Institute founder Brad Dacus explains that the lawsuit involves an incident at the College of Alameda, where two students stopped and prayed for an ailing teacher. "Someone saw what the students had done, reported it to the authorities there at the college, and the students were then expelled, suspended from the school for a number of days simply and solely because they were caught praying for a teacher," he explains. Dacus mentions another reason why he is puzzled by the December 2007 action against the students. "The interesting thing is that there were absolutely no objections from the teacher for the fact that these kids prayed for her and cared about her and wanted to pray for her. No objections at all," he adds. He also says that "[i]t is alarming that a publicly funded college would seek to suspend and expel students for praying on campus, then dig in its heels to defend an untenable, unconstitutional position."
