A group of young Christian evangelists ran into trouble with the law while trying to evangelize on an Ohio campus.
Five of seven members were arrested on the campus of Sinclair Community College in Dayton after being told to leave. All of it took place on public property. The group of Christians was approached by police who allegedly denied their constitutional right to freedom of speech. Officer: "You're all going to jail. Come on, it's private property. You want to go to jail, too? This is not First Amendment; you're on private property and you need to go." Student: "We have a right to be here". Officer: "You want to go to jail, too?" Student: "We have a right to be here." One member of the group, Dan Poillon, remains jailed pending arraignment. Much of the action was caught on video by another member, but police seized the camera and still have it. Student Jason Storms describes the scene. "When they tackled Dan and threw him to the ground, she got her camera out and began to film, so we have film of Dan on the ground getting roughed up by the cops," he notes. "And then an officer came over to her and asked for the camera and she said 'No, I'm not going to give you the camera.' And so she was placed in handcuffs, and her camera was confiscated." Storms adds they were handing out Christian literature and witnessing peacefully and says there was no justification for violating their constitutional rights. The Alliance Defense Fund is representing the students.
