Eastern Michigan Univ.A letter has been sent from Eastern Michigan University (EMU) to lawmakers, denying claims that university officials participated in religious discrimination toward a graduate student.

EMU African-American grad student Julea Ward was kicked out of the school's counseling program after she requested a homosexual man be counseled by another person. According to Gary Glenn of the American Family Association of Michigan, Ward made the request because, as a Christian, her beliefs and counsel would not affirm the client's lifestyle. Ward was expelled just one class shy of getting her Master's degree, and Glenn points out she had a 3.9 GPA.

"EMU officials belittled her; they mocked her faith, pressured her to recant her faith, and she refused to do so," Glenn points out.

Glenn says that after reading the transcript of the hearing, it is clear that her civil and constitutional rights were violated. The Alliance Defense Fund has since filed suit Gary Glennagainst EMU on her behalf.

He contends the school would be wise to apologize to Ward and have her reinstated back into the graduate school program.
