The U.S. Supreme Court has set a date for arguments in connection with a veterans' memorial in the Mojave Desert of California.
Liberty Legal Institute launched a public campaign to save the memorial after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in the late 1990s. Attorney Hiram Sasser says the court date is October 7. "And the Supreme Court will decide whether a veterans' memorial put up in 1934 by the VFW [Veterans of Foreign Wars], that happens to be in the shape of a cross sitting out in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave Desert, is a violation of separation of church and state," Sasser explains. The cross is currently hidden in a plywood box pending outcome of the case, which Sasser believes could have a domino effect. "This case is going to decide the fate of literally thousands of veterans' memorials across the country that are also in the shape of crosses or have other religious imagery attached to them, including the two World War I memorials in Arlington Cemetery, both of which are giant free-standing crosses," he adds. The ACLU and similar organizations want the memorials torn down. Liberty Legal Institute is siding with monument supporters.
