A Ten Commandments monument in Stigler, Oklahoma, has been ruled unconstitutional by the Tenth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The Ten Commandments display at the courthouse is among several other historical monuments. The Tenth Circuit voted 6-to-6 to uphold its previous ruling. Alliance Defense Fund attorney Kevin Theriot tells OneNewsNow there were several dissents, such as the county commissioners expressing their own religious views openly. "The county commissioners expressed their personal views on their own time that they thought the Ten Commandments monument on the courthouse lawn was a good idea, but none of the comments were made during a meeting or in their official capacity," says Theriot. "And the court said that, well, that doesn't matter because they live in a small town. It doesn't matter because no one knows when they are off duty or on duty, which is kind of ludicrous." It is the first case in a long time where the monuments have been held to be unconstitutional. Theriot says this case is ripe for an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
