The Rutherford Institute is handling a lawsuit filed against a chaplaincy group.
The lawsuit has been filed by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, a foundation which seeks to ensure the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom to those serving in the United States Armed Forces. It has been filed against the Chaplaincy of Full Gospel Churches, an agency which has endorsed military and civilian chaplains for more than two decades. President of The Rutherford Institute, John Whitehead, describes the complaint. "One of the chaplains that's endorsed by this group posted two-, three-, or four-line prayers on another website where the statement was made citing Psalm 109, which is basically a Psalm which asks God to deal with the wicked and protect the people of the Lord," the attorney says. Whitehead further explains how this posted prayer sparked the accuser to file the suit. "Mikey Weinstein, who is the founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation, has now filed a lawsuit saying these are terroristic threats under Texas law and should be prosecuted," he says. Whitehead believes his client has a First Amendment right to pray the way he wants. He further considers the lawsuit frivolous and feels it will be difficult to prove.
