DC Council mutes public's voice

The Washington, DC, City Council is heading toward a major conflict with its citizens.

Austin NimocksThe DC Council is holding another public hearing today based on a requested ballot initiative that seeks to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) senior legal counsel Austin R. Nimocks has previously dealt with this.

"Well, the fundamental issue here in the District of Columbia is the right of the citizens to vote," notes Nimocks. "The citizens have a right to make laws, just like the Council does, and yet they are being denied their right to vote on the most important fundamental issue of our time and day -- and that is the issue of marriage."

David Catania, an openly homosexual Council member, has submitted an ordinance that would legalize same-sex "marriage." As Nimocks points out, the Council favors the ordinance.

"You have 600-plus-thousand registered DC residents, but their right to speak on this issue is being squelched in favor of only 13 City Council members," he argues.

The ADF attorney says this decision should not be made by bureaucrats, but needs to be done by the people -- and he urges them to make themselves heard. The City Council's initial vote is for homosexual marriage, but a final vote is to be taken before it will be reviewed by Congress for a maximum 30 days.
