Permissible for town to celebrate Christmas

An Ohio village is bowing to pressure by cancelling its annual Christmas parade -- but a Christian attorney says there's no reason to.

Matt StaverAmelia Mayor Leroy Ellington is quoted as saying that the village solicitor informed council members that the town could be sued for using public money to sponsor a parade honoring the birth of Jesus Christ. But Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel tells OneNewsNow the decision is just a matter of misinformation.

"The business association in the past had sponsored the village's Christmas parade, and clearly the city can sponsor it as well," Staver argues.

He further contends there is nothing unconstitutional about the city's sponsorship. Christmas, he points out, is a national holiday.

Christmas tree drawing 2"I imagine if they would check their calendar, the city employees are off [on Christmas Day], along with all of the state employees as well, and it's certainly permissible to celebrate Christmas as a holiday," he states. "You don't have to water down the name. You don't have to change it to 'winter holiday.' You don't have to pretend that it doesn't exist. It is clearly constitutional."

Staver says Liberty Counsel this Christmas season will be friend to those standing up for Christmas, and foe to those who want to silence it.
