A dramatic rise in food prices has created a humanitarian crisis in Guatemala.

GuatemalaGuatemala is one of the areas most severely affected, according to Edouard Lassegue, regional vice president with Compassion International. "Earlier this week, the president of Guatemala declared a state of calamity over the country because of the situation of famine that has hit the country," he explains.

The ministry is working with its church partners to fight hunger and related issues affecting Compassion-assisted children.

"We just come alongside of them to help them minister to the people in their community, so this is a great way for us to show the love of Christ -- but also to exemplify the model that Jesus Christ himself left us, to strengthen the institution of the local church," Lassegue adds.

Compassion International has donated $250,000 from its Global Food Crisis Fund to help out.
