South AmericaA husband-and-wife missionary couple says serving in Latin America presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities.

Several years ago, Jared and Elisabeth Fly were on track for well-paying, prestigious jobs in the corporate world. But the Flys say they felt God calling them to serve on the international mission field. The couple contacted Tupelo, Mississippi-based Global Outreach, and has now been serving for two years in Ecuador.

"We've always led a youth group of about 15 youth," shares Jared, "and when we return [to Ecuador] we're going to take that youth group and try to grow them and disciple them in the Lord. And then we have community outreach, like Bible studies we do with the community as well as [with] believers who are already in the churches there."

Bible man pointing at scriptureThe Flys serve in Babahoyo, a city of about 115,000 people, all living in a ten-square-mile area. While Jared says it can take time to gain the trust of men in that culture, Elisabeth finds that women are more trusting and open to sharing about their needs and hearing the gospel.

"Women crave relationships, and as you make yourself available to them, they take an interest in you -- and...my love is Jesus Christ, so naturally that love will be shown to them and that interest will be shown to them as well," she explains. "Women, I think, are more open to the message that Jesus has because ultimately it is a message about...a love relationship."

The Flys say that currently they have freedom to minister and witness in Ecuador.
