A new report documents an alarming increase in persecution against house church Christians in China.
The latest persecution report by the China Aid Association (CAA) documents confirmed reports of abuse and mistreatment against house church Christians in the communist nation. According to the report in 2008, the total number of house church Christians persecuted in China increased 157 percent. In Beijing alone, persecution increased by more than 400 percent over the previous year. CAA spokesperson Katherine Cason says incidents of persecution increased leading up to the Summer Olympics -- and although the games are over, she laments that the persecution has not subsided. "The Chinese government is not being held accountable by the world community for their acts against house church Christians," she notes. "They feel more confident in their use of violent tactics in order to suppress these Christians." Cason believes the positive media coverage heaped on China during the Olympics has emboldened communist authorities to ramp up their persecution of Christians.
