Two Christian women are jailed in Iran, reportedly because they will not deny their faith in Christ.
Maryam Rostampour and Marzieh Amirizadeh Esmaeilabad were arrested in March, originally accused of taking part in illegal gatherings and acting against state security. In August, they both appeared before an Iranian judge, who asked them to deny their Christian faith and return to Islam. Both refused, and have remained imprisoned since. Lindsay Vessey of Open Doors USA says a campaign has been launched for the prisoners, and she explains what Americans can do on the women's behalf. "On our website right now, listeners can go to our website and they can actually send a message directly from our website to ambassador Khazaee, who is the Iranian ambassador to Iran's permanent mission at the U.N.," she says. "So that would be a great way just to let the government know that people are watching this case, and it also applies pressure on the Iranian government to release them." Vessey says the women have suffered harsh conditions, including sleep deprivation and other psychological pressure. They have suffered intense interrogation and are neglected medical attention.
