A political analyst and former Colorado congressman disagrees with Tom Tancredo's decision to enter Colorado's race for governor as a third-party candidate.
According to The Washington Times, the former presidential candidate announced on Monday that he will run for Colorado governor as a member of the American Constitution Party. He claims he is entering the race because neither of the two candidates vying for the Republican Party nomination -- fellow former Congressman Scott McInnis and businessman Dan Maes -- agreed to his ultimatum to drop out of the race the day after the August 10 primary so the party could appoint a replacement. Tancredo is convinced that neither candidate could defeat the likely Democratic nominee, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.Bob Beauprez, another former Colorado congressman, agrees with pundits who believe Tancredo's candidacy will dash GOP chances. "I wish Tom weren't doing this; this is not helpful," Beauprez laments. "What this is almost surely going to do is...take whatever conservative-leaning votes [that] might have gone to a Republican nominee, split them up, and by a plurality most likely elect John Hickenlooper, the Democrat in this race. That's what troubles many of us." But the political analyst thinks he knows why Tancredo has chosen this course of action. "Tom would have had trouble running if it was just a head-to-head, should he have been the Republican nominee against the Democrat," he suggests. "I think his calculus is that if all he has to do is maybe get 35 percent of the vote, maybe there's a chance." But Beauprez concludes that even if that were to happen, Tancredo's chance would still be very small.
