Return to Christ, save the country

Family Research Council president Tony Perkins says the only way Christians can change America is by seeking God individually and "winning people to the Lord one at a time."

Perkins took the unusual step of telling his staff members not to come to work yesterday in Washington, but rather to take part in a day of prayer and fasting for the nation. The pro-family leader says many Evangelicals and "values voters" are discouraged because there is not one presidential candidate who clearly lines up with their values and beliefs.

Tony Perkins"While we need to be involved in shaping public policy, just as we need to be involved in education or entertainment or any other realm of society, I think we have oftentimes placed our hopes on a political candidate in hopes of being able to turn the nation back into the right direction," Perkins contends. "I think we're left only with the choice of returning to God and to Jesus Christ."

The church, according to Perkins, is the catalyst for that kind of change. And while his decision regarding FRC's staff on Monday may have been unusual, he says these are unusual times.

"Literally before us, we're seeing God's institution of marriage being redefined – 5,000 years of human history disregarded. I think that the church needs to be awakened, and that begins with each of us as believers. And as we work alongside of pastors and churches, our hope is that, as a church, that we will repent, that we will take our rightful role in society," Perkins explains. "But first we must get right with God, and that begins with our personal relationships."

According to Perkins, the nation is witnessing a rising tide of evil that threatens the very foundations of the Republic, but Christians should not lose perspective or get discouraged.
