Proposition 8 CaliforniaA Proposition 8 volunteer in California was recently assaulted, evidently because he supports the proposed state constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

The victim, Jose Nunez, was preparing to place Prop. 8 lawn signs when the attack happened. Chip White, a spokesman for the "Yes on 8" campaign, explains what happened.

"The attacker grabbed about 75 signs, [then] yelled at Mr. Nunez [asking] 'what do you have against gays?' And Mr. Nunez replied that he had nothing against gays -- but he was attacked anyway."

Someone in a nearby church dialed 911, but police did not arrive in time to prevent Nunez from being injured.

injured knee injury"[The attack] caused Mr. Nunez to suffer a bloody eye, serious wounds to his face, and a scratch to his knee," says White. "He was rushed by ambulance to a local hospital where he received 16 stitches."

Police are investigating the incident. White considers the attack a reflection on those who oppose Proposition 8, which would nullify a state Supreme Court decision giving homosexuals the right to "marry."

"It's outrageous that the 'No [on 8'] campaign calls themselves the voice of tolerance and moderation and wants people to feel bad for supporting traditional marriage, because there is nothing tolerant or moderate about beating up Jose," he shares.

According to the Yes on 8 campaign, Nunez -- a native of Mexico -- became an American citizen just two months and plans to vote for the first time in November. The father of three says the attack only strengthens his resolve to help get Prop. 8 passed on November 4.
