Freedom of Choice Act looms, Catholics afraid

baby ultrasoundConservative Catholics fear the pending domination of the Freedom of Choice Act, even though 54 percent of Catholics voted for pro-abortion candidate Barack Obama in the presidential election.

That statistic was a bit surprising to American Life League (ALL), considering the effort by many of the church's bishops to sway the flock away from supporting the strong pro-abortion candidate. LifeNews.com says the Freedom of Choice Act, or FOCA, would legalize unlimited abortions nationally and would overturn the current laws adopted by all 50 states designed to reduce abortions. President-elect Obama has stated he would sign the FOCA bill as his first presidential act.

katie Walker ALLCatholic bishops expressed concern that FOCA could force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions against their will. However, ALL spokesperson Katie Walker is not despairing over the current situation.

"The ray of hope in all of this was the leadership we've really seen from the bishops this year," she notes. "That's something unique and unprecedented that they have taken such a front role in politics this year and in making sure that Catholics are voting in accordance with their faith."

Walker recognizes that changes do not usually come overnight, so she says American Life League is still hopeful. "[The bishops] continue hammering and continue teaching and faithfully shepherding the faithful, that we will see a complete reverse of the numbers and make sure that Catholics are voting pro-life."

Experts expect abortions to increase by as much as 125,000 per year if FOCA is passed.
