Opponents of California's marriage amendment Proposition 8 are now waging war, in the form of blacklists, against donors to the campaign.
Several websites have been set up to post the names and personal information, such as phone numbers, of people who donated money to preserve traditional marriage. One website in particular, AntiGayBlacklist.com, features business names, their location, and the amounts donated. Randy Thomasson of the Campaign for Children and Families calls these actions much different than boycotting a business. "When you don't do business with an individual and the individual has done something you disagree with, to go out of your way to try to hurt them, to harass them with phone calls, to get people to try to hurt them -- that is an individual attack, which has no place in America," he contends. Thomasson reminds Christians the Bible is very plain about the persecution they might experience. "We can actually say, 'I am going to be on the record for Jesus Christ. I am going to be on the record for standing up for righteousness. I am not going to flee when mere opposition comes my way. I'm going to remember my brothers and sisters across the world who are losing limbs and lives,'" he adds. Brad Dacus of Pacific Justice Institute believes the blacklist strategy will backfire. "The hatred and intimidation we are seeing right now from gay activists could set their movement back years," says Dacus. "If anything, they are convincing a lot of Californians that we did the right thing by not caving in to their demands."
